Katex developed by Khan Academy is the less heavy but does not support some Math functions and is still under development. The main advantage of Katex is its rendering speed.
MathJax, the most comprehensive and fully developed renderer which supports both Latex and MathML input and output is svg or CommonHTML. I think the default option is CommonHTML. The main issue with MathJax was its low speed in the past but I think in the new version, the team has done a great job and has increased the rendering speed to be comparable with Katex.
